John Bates (MCIPR)
John (jb), a Director of EPiCC, is a freelance media and communications advisor working with blue chip organisations, on planned communications and issues management.
As a communications practitioner jb is experienced in issues and all aspects of crisis management and has acted as a trusted advisor and coach to senior public and private sector managers in strategy, proactive and reactive communications.
Often working on high profile topics and sensitive subjects, jb has delivered training; coaching and mentoring, at boardroom level as well as to operational staff and groups throughout the UK and internationally, using full role play exercises, workshops and table top techniques.
As a media and communications specialist, jb maintains contact with national, regional and local press and broadcast media to help provide reliable PR support to positively influence outcomes and to represent the needs of complex organisations in relation to” hard news” stories, including food scares and animal disease.
Jb, a qualified trainer, co-directs week-long national training courses for all new police press officers and an advanced, strategic course for senior police communicators.
Working with a range of clients and diverse scenarios, jb has been involved in many high profile projects including the preparations for the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 and London 2012. His work in the outsourcing arena, with global companies, Group 4 and Serco in the UK, Australia and South Africa, has meant managing the communications in the aftermath of major incidents and events including disorder (riots) in prisons and immigration detention facilities and issues around the transportation of prisoners.
From time to time this has led to liaison with select committees, COBRA and regulators and assignments in a number of countries.
